Few surfers have a style and grace like our newest Ambassador Josie Prendergast. It comes through in everything she does, whether she’s elegantly gliding on remote waves in the Mentawai’s or just hanging on shore with her family. She’s got a heart of gold and a passion for people, spending much of her time working with nonprofits in the Philippines that give children better schooling, improved health, and yes, surfboards.
Originally born in Siargao, Philippines, she moved to Byron Bay when she was 4 and the ocean has been a vital part of her effortless flow ever since. When she’s on a longboard, her poise and artistry is truly one of a kind, transforming the simple act of logging into an awe-inspiring dance across the water. If you can’t tell, we’re pretty excited to have her part of the RAEN family.
We recently caught up with Josie amidst our isolation to talk about her family, inspirations, and the goal to one day surf Malibu.
Can you tell us a bit more about your family and where you’re from?
I was born on a little island called Siargao, Philippines. I lived about five minutes from the surf break, Cloud Nine. My mom’s whole side of the family is from there. I got to live a really simple, sweet, island life as a little kid.
You moved to Australia when you were young, but you obviously stay close to your family back in the Philippines.
Yeah, I moved to Byron Bay at 4. But every year we’d go back to the Philippines for a month or so to keep a close connection to our community and culture. I still go back and fish with my uncles, living a very simple and happy life. Going back home to the Philippines is my happy place and it makes my heart sing.
Apart from surfing, what’s your passion?
To be with kids and hopefully become a kindergarten teacher one day.
What’s your favorite local break?
The Pass.
Who are your favorite surfers?
I love watching Lauren Hill, Kassia Meador, and Leah Dawson - all beautiful surfers that I grew up watching. They surf with such grace and I look up to them. I remember I used to type in “Kassia Meador – Roxy” to just watch her on Youtube!
And there’s probably plenty of inspiration at home in Byron?
Yeah. A lot of support and motivation from the older guys in Byron. They’ve taught me how to cross step and drop knee.
Who are your role models?
All the Billabong girls really push me – we are all super supportive of each other and it’s amazing to travel with them.
Free surf or contest?
Free surf for sure!
Favorite local hangout?
Probably any beach at home in Byron or my home in Siargao.
Best piece of advice you’ve ever received?
There’s been many! Maybe this: At the end of the day, we are all growing, living and learning.
