RAEN Ambassador and water = life advocate Kassia Meador recently sat down with Chief Iron Eagle, a leader of the resistance at the Oceti Sakowin Camp in North Dakota to discuss the purpose of their protest and why water is the most important thing to their people.

The Standing Rock Sioux Tribe’s land and water source are being taken away from them by a company called Energy Transfer Partners who is currently in the process of building an oil pipeline crossing the Missouri River called the Keystone XL and Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL).

The Oceti Sakowin Camp is the place where the peaceful protestors lived so they could stay close to the water that is so sacred to them. The purpose of the resistance comes from the tribe’s fear that the oil pipeline will leak into the river and contaminate it.
